A case of Hantavirus was identified in Albania about four decades ago, indicating that the presence of this virus in the country is not a new phenomenon, but a documented reality since the 1980s.

Referring to a publication in the prestigious journal The Lancet, the first case was recorded in northern Albania and has become part of the international scientific literature. The study, published on November 21, 1987, is titled “Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in a case in northern Albania” and describes a case of haemorrhagic fever associated with renal syndrome.

This scientific documentation constitutes one of the earliest references linking Albania to this virus, which is known for its serious impact on human health. According to a recent reaction on social networks by Silva Bino, Head of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases at the IHP, the authors of this report are researchers E. Eltari, M. Nuti, I. Hasko and A. Gina.

Hantavirus is transmitted primarily by rodents and can be transmitted to humans through contact with contaminated urine, feces, or dust. In some cases, the infection can lead to serious complications, particularly affecting the kidneys and circulatory system.

Although such cases are rare, experts emphasize the importance of monitoring and awareness, especially in rural areas or those where contact with rodents is more frequent. This revival of an old case serves as a reminder of the importance of epidemiological surveillance and timely response to infectious diseases.
