The singer of the popular music of Central Albania, Shqiponja Lela, passed away today. She had been suffering from a serious illness for a long time.
Shqiponja was the daughter of folk music icon Myslym Lela, who is considered a convincing giant of the Albanian folk sound.
Shciponja Lela is best known as a member of the Lela Family Ensemble which toured overseas and recorded the album Polyphonies vocales et instrumentales d'Albanie in 1992.
In addition to her work with this group, she has also recorded under her own name, specializing in popular wedding songs of Central Albania.
