An eyewitness described the dramatic moments that took place on Monday afternoon just before the Iasmos toll booth on the Egnatia highway, when a truck crashed into two cars, causing them to catch fire and killing three people.
"We could hear the three people begging us to get them out. 'Get us out, get us out'. They were screaming 'help, get us out, save us'. People were burning alive. We saw them with our own eyes and all three were charred. We couldn't get them out, they were trapped," a witness told Greek media.
Explaining what happened, he also said that the tires started to blow out.
"Within a split second, the car was engulfed in flames. It started making lots of explosions. The fire was coming from the truck very hard. It was fast and strong," he added.
The victims of the tragic car accident are 59-year-old Viktor, his 57-year-old wife
Marianka was sitting in the back seat of the car next to the 61-year-old man's 49-year-old wife, who was the only survivor after managing to get out of the burning car.
The four were returning from a wedding in Xanthi, while in the second car that the truck hit were Viktor and Marianka's daughter, their son-in-law, and their two grandchildren, aged 4 and 6.
When the truck hit the car driven by the 59-year-old, they then collided with the car in which his pregnant daughter, her husband and their two children were travelling.
The two cars were heading towards Xanthi, in a 600-meter queue at the toll booth, when the truck hit the first one. A fire broke out at the scene, resulting in the deaths of the 59-year-old driver, his wife and his friend.
