At least 30-50 people are suspected to have lost their lives when the boat sank in the English Channel, according to British media. An aerial search operation has already been launched for dead bodies and survivors. It is learned that the dinghy with immigrants ran into difficulties in the early hours of this morning, when it broke apart and sank.

The first calls to the Coast Guard came in around 3:00 am. The Marine Traffic Radar website showed a group of ships in the channel between Lydd in Kent and Cap Gris Nez in France, as well as a coastguard helicopter are at the scene including two RNLI lifeboats from Ramsgate and Rye, the Royal Navy patrol boat HMS Severn, a French patrol vessel of the Kermorvan coastguard as well as two fishing vessels.

Minister Suella Braverman's reaction:

I am aware of a disturbing incident in the Channel this morning and I am continuing to update it as agencies respond and establish the full facts as a matter of urgency. My heartfelt thoughts are with all involved.
