6 primary schools and 18 classrooms throughout the pre-university education system in Korca district have been closed due to the lack of students.

Schools of the villages of Kodras in Kolonjë, Kapshticë in Devoll and Mjaltas, Desmirë, Zvarisht and Osojë in the Municipality of Maliqi will not open the doors this early school year.

The decrease in birth rate and the massive emigration of recent years have been reflected in insufficient numbers of students to keep classes open mainly in the village schools of Maliq municipality and some in Korca.

According to the head of the Independent Education Union in Korca Leonard Trebicka, the effects of the decrease in the number of the population for several years are felt in the education system, but currently Albania has lost almost 1/3 of its pupils.

"The figures are very low, at least you have official figures, but I am saying that in all Albania, almost 30% of students are missing, so 1/3 less. It is a very alarming and expected figure because this has not happened today, it has been years and years, the consequences are today but will be in the next few years, even more will be felt the absence of students.

All those who have left Albania, especially young people who, after a few years, are born abroad, not here. This decline in the number of births in Albania indisputablely in very large numbers and the emigrating of the rest has caused Albanian schools to suffer the lack of students throughout the country's territory.

The first grades are the ones that feel it the most, even it has started for two years that the first grades are feeling and growing up generation after generation the first grades go to the 5th and so on, in high school and after a few years the number of students will be felt in the 9-year-old schools and in the city high schools, But now they feel in the lower cycle, even we have closed schools in the city of Korça especially in rural areas that have massive population departures.

We have information that schools have been closed and passed into subordinate schools in some villages. We have managed to at least not leave teachers since June, which is important for us as a union. In Korca at least there is no school with two shifts, there are in korça district but there are very few", said Leonard Trebicka, the head of the independent korça education union.

The number of students is also noted in first-grade enrolments. According to official information from the education directorate for this school year, 1302 students were enrolled in the first grade, out of 1698 who were enrolled last year. In the 10th grade, 502 students were enrolled. / Top Channel
