The Meloni government is implementing the decree approved on March 28th and now the Gjadri camp will also be used to detain immigrants awaiting deportation and who no longer have the right to asylum. Based on this decree, two ships with a total of 40 immigrants who have deportation orders are expected to arrive at the Port of Shëngjin today.

The first ship is expected to arrive at 15:00 with 15 migrants and the second around 19:00 with 25 migrants as part of the Albania-Italy agreement. They will be temporarily accommodated in the reception center in Gjadra. This flow is expected to increase, but it is confirmed that in the future, airlines will be operated to bring the migrants.

The maximum period of stay in the Gjadri center will be 18 months. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has emphasized that the new policies have significantly reduced the flow of immigrants to Italy and that the centers in Albania are an effective management model.

After a pause in the functioning of the reception centers in Shëngjin and Gjadra, the center managers have re-contacted the employees who were part of the first collaboration to resume work in these camps starting on Thursday.

With this decree, the Italian government has not changed the destination of the center, but intends to use it also to detain illegal immigrants awaiting deportation. Initially, this center was intended to hold for up to 28 days asylum seekers rescued at sea by Italian military ships, coming from countries considered safe, to undergo accelerated border procedures.

Now, deported migrants will be held in Gjadra for up to 18 months, until their countries of origin accept their return. The Italian government is awaiting the ruling of the EU Court of Justice on the "Safe Countries" decree.
