The court hearing against 40 Albanian and Colombian accused of international cocaine trafficking within the "Black Eagle" file continues these days.
Within the framework of the investigations during a period of 5 years, 8, 11 and 20 kg were seized in cars that were being sent abroad and 449 kg in the port of Antwerp in a shipment of bananas, in which 6689 kg of cocaine were discovered.
The remaining 6,240 kilograms was intended for other criminal organizations.
The investigations showed that one of the main defendants, Alfredo H., was in contact with the Italian mafia groups established in Limburg. Thus, the two organizations shared a warehouse.
Therefore, the federal prosecutor reaches the amount of 13.42 million euros, given that the organization sold its cocaine at the wholesale price of 27,500 euros per kilogram.
The organization, the representative of the public prosecutor underlined in her indictment, has received cocaine in different forms. When not hidden in banana crates, the drug could be integrated into products: coal, cement, fruit juice.
Then it had to be extracted, hence the importance of having Colombian "chemists". In June 2021, 7,000 liters of liquid will be discovered during a search in a garage. The liquid contained 800 kg of cocaine.
To carry out this traffic, alongside the leaders of the criminal organization there were men who performed very specific tasks: warehouse management, "workforce" management. There were "watchers" who monitored the docks of the port, "extractors" who removed the cocaine from the containers when it was hidden in bags.
For this purpose these men could use sloops, which, in the harbors of Antwerp and Ghent, went out to meet the boats.
Pigeons, equipped with waterproof bags, removed the cocaine. Large ladders were sometimes used to reach containers sometimes stacked four stories high.
These containers were sometimes tracked using GPS beacons while waiting for the most favorable moment to evacuate the drugs. The work of these "extractors" was sometimes facilitated by internal cooperation in the ports.
There were also "suppliers", who provided premises, vehicles or canoes. There were "chemists" who washed, packaged or made cocaine cakes. There were still "transporters" and "deliverers" who brought the cocaine mainly to Germany, Spain, Italy or the Netherlands. And, after all, they were the "cleaners" of the profits generated by this criminal activity.
On Thursday, federal prosecutors will detail the role of the 40 defendants and the sentences sought.
The Colombian chemist speaks: " I was deceived "
A 68-year-old Colombian, accused in the "Black Eagle" trial, related to drug trafficking, explained on Monday before the Brussels criminal court that he participated in the facts without knowing it.
According to his explanations, one of the main defendants, with whom he had joined in a legal cannabis cultivation project, lied to him about the reality of their economic activities.
The defendant said he arrived in Belgium in 1989 because his country, Colombia, had become "unlivable under Pablo Escobar".
He then explained at length in court his career as a football coach, before returning to his latest professional activities, related to the cultivation and sale of legal cannabis (CBD).
He claimed that he approached an individual, who is one of the main defendants in this case, to be his partner in this "business". He claimed he didn't know it was just a cover for a drug deal.
According to the investigations, the main defendant in question actually owned and appropriated a legal cannabis plantation in Greece, subsidized by the government.
It appears that this man also owned companies in Cyprus and Dubai and had invested in the coal trade, possibly to launder money from drug trafficking.
Some of the Albanians mentioned in this process have been previously identified by the media as Artur S., Indrit. K., Arben I., or the Kosovar Bashkim O., considered among the biggest Albanian players in the cocaine market.
In this file, connections with officials in Albania were discovered and other details are expected to emerge in the following sessions.
