Multi-million dollar online fraud scheme involving fake news from celebrities is uncovered. Three call centers in Albania were raided and ten people were arrested. Austrians were among the victims.

The Austrian Prosecutor's Office for Economic Crimes and Corruption and the Federal Criminal Police Office, together with Albanian authorities, have uncovered an international multi-million euro internet fraud involving fake news from celebrities.

As authorities announced at a press conference on Wednesday, the victims were lured into investments with false information.

Three call centers in Albania were dismantled and ten people were arrested. Among the victims were Austrians.

The operation was carried out with the support of Europol and Eurojust. The investigation lasted two years.

The damage amounts to at least 50 million euros. 900,000 euros have already been recovered.

The identities of well-known figures such as the Federal President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen, and ORF presenter Armin Wolf, were used in the scam.
