Requesting early release, Safet Gjici files appeal with the Court of Appeals

Former mayor of Kukës Safet Gjici has appealed to the Court of Appeal with General Jurisdiction against the decision of the Elbasan court that overturned his early release.

Legal defense attorney Përparim Kulluri requested from the court the appointment of experts to determine his client's health condition, a request which was accepted by the trial panel.

At the next session on May 12, the experts are expected to appear in the Appeal and provide the court with the prepared acts, which will show whether or not the former socialist mayor is able to receive necessary medical treatment in prison conditions, or if his life is at risk from being in prison.

Safet Gjici has been convicted of abuse of office and passive corruption by the Appeals Court of Kosovo. He was arrested in June 2023 and was finally sentenced by the Special Appeals Court in June of this year to 4 years and 6 months in prison, a sentence which was reduced to 3 years due to the summary trial.
