Asylum requests, here are the countries that "prefer" Albanians as a

Applications for asylum (international protection) are rising again, after falling during 2020-2021, affected by travel restrictions imposed during the pandemic.

In the first 7 months of the year, nearly 5,800 requests for asylum were registered by Albanian citizens in one of the countries of the European Union, according to Eurostat. Compared to the same period a year ago,
the figure has doubled.

But which are the countries where Albanians are rushing to seek asylum?

France remains the main destination of Albanian asylum seekers due to the facilitating social policies offered by this country. According to Eurostat data, over 3,000 citizens, or 53% of the total, sought asylum in France in the January-July period. The highest number of applications was recorded in July, exceeding 500 such applications. Compared to the same period a year ago, for the 7th month, asylum applications to France have doubled.

The second country is Germany. For the 7th month there were almost 800 applications, or 15% of the total. Compared to the same period a year ago, the figure has almost quadrupled.

Italy ranks after Germany, which has historically been the destination of Albanian immigrants. For the period January-July 2022, there were a total of almost 700 applications.

Greece, the other traditional immigration destination, received around 600 applications.

Belgium continued to remain in fourth place, with 240 applications in total.

A country that is being preferred recently is Ireland, with 80 applications in total (from 20 in the same period a year ago), followed by Sweden (75), the Netherlands (45).

Although there are many applications for international protection, almost all of them are rejected, as Albania is listed on the list of safe countries, unlike other countries whose citizens flee war or internal conflicts.

Eurostat no longer reports data for the United Kingdom, as of December 2020, following its exit from the EU.

However, the official data of the British authorities show that around 4729 Albanians entered their country illegally and registered as asylum seekers during the period January-June 2022, a figure that is 80% of all asylum requests in 27 other European Union countries, bringing the total number of applications to over 10,000. Out of the total number of Albanian immigrants, 2165 people had entered the country in rafts (small boats). According to official data, Albanians ranked first in terms of the large number who entered Great Britain, risking their lives.

"The number of Albanians coming in small boats has increased significantly during the last quarter April - June 2022. Before this period, Albanians usually did not use small boats. There were 2,165 arrivals between January and June 2022, compared to just 23 detected in the same period a year earlier (January to June 2021)," Britain's Ministry of Defense reported.

Migrants who enter the UK on dinghies are immediately registered as asylum seekers because they have seriously risked their lives by traveling in this way.

The number of Albanians who travel by dinghy to Britain is higher than that of countries in conflict and dictatorship such as Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. Even the Ukrainians who are at war have not taken such initiatives.
