An old wooden bridge, built about 20 years ago, has today become one of the biggest dangers for the residents of the village of Përlat i Epërm.
Damaged by time, rain, and a total lack of maintenance, this bridge is the only crossing connecting part of the village to the main road and basic services.
The concern was raised in the editorial office of the show "Fiks Fare" by Ms. Vitore Lekgegaj, a nurse for about 40 years and also a resident of the area. She says that in order to practice her profession and help the residents, she has to cross this bridge at least two to three times a day.
"I have been a nurse for 40 years and I have called you here about this bridge, because it is very dangerous. I have to cross it every day, sometimes two or three times a day. The road is bad, but the most difficult thing is crossing the bridge. This bridge was built about 20 years ago and today it is severely damaged. I have also brought this problem to the institutions, but we have not received any response," the nurse says.
According to residents, the condition of the bridge has deteriorated significantly after recent rainfall, which has damaged the wooden structure and increased the risk of collapse. In the absence of institutional intervention, residents have tried to keep it "standing" themselves with makeshift means.
Fear is a daily occurrence, especially for children and the elderly, who are forced to use the bridge to go to school, work or health services. Residents say this situation has been going on for years, with no concrete solution.
"I'm 25 years old and this bridge has always been dangerous. I cross here every day. After the rain, we tried to fix it ourselves as much as we could. We even went to the mayor, but we didn't get any solution," claims a resident.
In one specific case, the "Fiks Fare" team, together with Ms. Vitore and the residents, go to the apartment of a sick person, crossing the damaged bridge, to show up close the difficulty and real danger that both the residents and the nurse face every day to provide medical assistance.
On the other hand, representatives of the Administrative Unit and the Mirdita Municipality admit that they are aware of the situation. Astrit Deda, a representative of the administrative unit, states that the bridge is not a classic bridge, but a boardwalk, which has suffered damage after the heavy rainfall of recent months.
He emphasizes that an emergency intervention has been carried out and that a more complete repair is expected.
Meanwhile, the Mirdita Municipality confirms that the current intervention is only provisional and that a final solution requires funds and more favorable conditions for works.
Until then, the residents of Upper Përlat continue to face danger every day, crossing a rotten bridge, without protection and without any safety standards, while institutional promises still remain without concrete deadlines.
