For several weeks, online job placement agencies have been posting advertisements for the recruitment of Albanian seamstresses to work in clothing factories in Italy. The advertisements show that the employees are offered regular employment in Italy, with an employment contract according to Italian regulations. The net salary starts at 1,300 euros per month.
According to reports, employees also benefit from 13 annual salaries, paid vacations, accommodation provided by the employer, working conditions and opportunities for long-term cooperation.
To apply, at least 1 year of work experience in tailoring companies in Albania is required. Monitor contacted one of the mediation agencies, which explained that candidates who are required to be employed as seamstresses in Italian factories must have work experience in the tailoring sector of clothing in Albania and be between the ages of 20 and 50. In addition to employment, the company also offered accommodation. According to the agency, the employment offers come from linen clothing factories in Pisa, Bergamo and Perugia.
Why is Italy looking for Albanian seamstresses? The recruitment of Albanian workers for Italian factories comes at a time when the Italian textile, clothing and footwear industry is also facing a labor shortage.
According to data published by Unioncamere (the Italian Union of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Crafts and Agriculture) and the Italian Ministry of Labor, through the Excelsior Information System, Italian companies anticipate around 568 thousand new job openings for July 2026 and around 1.5 million during the July-September period.
In the textile, clothing and footwear industry, around 7 thousand new jobs are expected in July and around 20 thousand during the quarter. The difficulty in finding employees in this sector reaches 56.2%, highlighting a significant mismatch between companies' demand and labor supply.
Across all sectors, 42.6% of the positions expected to be filled in Italy are proving difficult to fill. This shows that the labor shortage has become a significant problem for Italian companies as well.
Also one of the reasons is the regulation to strengthen the rules for unsold products for clothing and footwear, which prohibits their recycling. European Regulation 2024/1781 provides that for large companies, the ban on the destruction of these products will apply from July 19, 2026, while for medium-sized companies from July 19, 2030.
For the period January-July 2026, this group's exports were 59.8 billion lek, with a contraction of 7.7% compared to the same period a year earlier. For years, the tailoring industry has created a base of specialized employees, especially seamstresses with experience in production for European companies and brands.
If experienced workers leave for European markets due to better salaries, Albanian factory managers warn that not only will it become more difficult to recruit new workers, but also to fulfill new contracts and orders. (Monitor)
