The Belgian newspaper "De Tijd" has dedicated an investigative article to international drug traffickers, who launder money by investing in real estate in Dubai, the "capital" of luxury and the paradise of internationally wanted criminals.
Among them is Hajdar Çopja, who, together with his brother Franc Çopja, led the notorious criminal group of Elbasan, involved in drug trafficking, murder and other serious crimes.
According to the Belgian newspaper, Çopja bought an apartment in Dubai in 2020 with a staggering value of 760 thousand euros. He linked up with other international traffickers and benefited from rising property prices in Dubai.
Excerpt from De Tijd newspaper article :
In the center of Dubai are two futuristic silver towers, which are connected by a three-story sky bridge. On the roof of this bridge is a swimming pool overlooking the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. These two towers, called Address Residence Sky Vieë, have over 530 apartments and 180 luxury hotel rooms. The buildings, which are 230 meters high, were completed in November 2019.
In February 2022, an apartment of 187 m² on the 29th floor was sold for more than 1.5 million euros. The buyer was the Spanish cocaine trafficker, Alejandro SV, 46 years old, known by the nickname "El Tigre". The seller was Othman EB, a 36-year-old known to Belgian justice, sentenced in absentia to seven years in prison for importing 840 kilograms of cocaine through the port of Antwerp. He bought the apartment in 2020 for 1.4 million euros.
This is the first time it has been reported that drug traffickers are sharing properties among themselves in Dubai. The leaked data was provided by a collective of investigative journalists, OÇRP, and analyzed by several media outlets, including De Tijd and international partners.
Arrests and international connections
In August 2022, El Tigre was arrested in Dubai for drug use. Spanish authorities issued an international warrant for his arrest, describing him as Spain's biggest known trafficker and a "high value target" for Europol. Meanwhile, in the same towers in Dubai, another trafficker, Franc G. from the Albanian clan, had bought an apartment for 760,000 euros in 2020 and sold it at a profit the following year. Franc G. was then extradited to Belgium, where he was wanted by justice involved in a major operation involving drug trafficking, laboratories in Brussels and international arms trade.
New property data
Investigations have revealed that Belgian and international traffickers had invested in multiple properties in Dubai, including apartments, villas and land, worth millions of euros. For example, Franc G. bought and sold ten properties in 2020, making huge profits. Also, other traffickers, such as Maati K. and Anass Z., had bought and sold luxury apartments in Dubai, taking advantage of the rising prices.
Attempts at extradition
Belgium has requested the extradition of 21 people from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The extradition agreement signed in December 2021 has yielded some results, with several traffickers already handed over to Belgian justice. Belgium is also working to seize criminal assets in Dubai, although this process remains challenging due to complicated legal structures and the efforts of traffickers to hide assets.
According to Belgian authorities, cooperation with the Emirates is improving, reducing opportunities for criminals to hide and marking an important step in the fight against international crime.
