Former President Ilir Meta, who has been in detention since October 2023, is expected to take two important legal steps this week in an attempt to ease the security measure against him. Meta's lawyers say he will seek to overturn the "prison arrest" measure in both the Constitutional Court and the Special Court of Appeals.

At the Constitutional Court, Meta is expected to file an appeal for unconstitutionality, challenging the decisions issued by the three levels of the judiciary that have decided to continue his detention, while he is being investigated on charges of: corruption, money laundering, concealment and failure to declare assets.

Meanwhile, in the Special Appeal, the decision of June 26, through which the Special Court of First Instance rejected the request to replace the measure with a more lenient one, will be challenged. According to the defense lawyers, the decision is unreasonable and does not present a clear legal basis for refusing release.

On the other hand, the Court has assessed that SPAK's investigations to date have strengthened reasonable suspicion against Meta and justified the harsh security measure.

Sources close to SPAK indicate that the investigation process is nearing completion. In addition to Meta, the file also includes his ex-wife, Monika Kryemadhi, and three other people.

The case against Ilir Meta is considered one of the most important political and criminal cases in recent years, and this week's developments are expected to be decisive for his fate.
