Summit in Rio de Janeiro, BRICS leaders concerned about trade tariffs!

BRICS countries expressed their "serious concerns" about the imposition of "unilateral" tariffs during the summit in Rio de Janeiro, at a time when the world is under pressure from the trade war launched by Donald Trump.

"We express serious concerns about the increase in unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures that harm trade," the text of the joint statement reads.

Such measures "hit the prospects for global economic growth," warn the 11 BRICS countries, which represent about half of the world's population and 40% of the world's GDP.

But the BRICS leaders avoided mentioning the United States and Donald Trump at a time when many countries, including China, are in negotiations with Washington on the issue. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the summit's organizer, opened the proceedings by painting a bleak picture of international cooperation. "We are witnessing an unprecedented collapse of multilateralism" in international relations, he said.

The summit was marked by some notable absences. For the first time since taking power in 2012, Chinese President Xi Jinping was absent, even though his country is the bloc's dominant power.

Another notable absence, Russian President Vladimir Putin, spoke at the Rio de Janeiro summit via videoconference due to an arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Ukraine.

Putin told BRICS leaders that the era of liberal globalization was over and that the future belonged to fast-growing emerging economies, which should strengthen the use of their national currencies in trade.

"Everything indicates that the liberal globalization model is becoming obsolete... The center of business activity is shifting towards emerging markets," he said, calling on BRICS countries to strengthen cooperation in a range of areas such as natural resources, logistics and finance.

The situation in the Middle East imposed its presence in the talks.

Opening the proceedings, Lula called: "Let us not remain indifferent to the genocide that Israel is committing in Gaza."

In their joint statement, the BRICS call for "an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire and a complete withdrawal" of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.

The BRICS also condemned the “military attacks” against Iran in June and denounced the “violation of international law,” without mentioning the United States or Israel. The BRICS group was created with the aim of rebalancing the world order in favor of the “Global South” against the West with the participation of Brazil, China, India, Russia and South Africa. In 2023, the group expanded with the admission of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran and Indonesia.

As it expanded, the group became increasingly heterogeneous, which made it difficult to formulate common positions.
