The director of the US Secret Service has resigned following criticism of former President Donald Trump's security management.

Kimberly Cheatle was criticized by both Republicans and Democrats for failing to defend President Donald Trump during his assassination.

Cheatle resigned a day after making a catastrophic appearance before the House oversight committee, where lawmakers from both sides signaled frustration with her inability to answer many questions about the shooting that wounded Trump and left one attendee dead at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

At the conclusion of the hearing, the committee's leading Democrat joined his Republican chairman to call for Cheatle's resignation.
