An Albanian murderer who shared videos on TikTok from his UK prison cell begging to be sent home will finally be deported to Albania as part of a £4m-a-year prisoner transfer scheme.
According to the Daily Mail article, Eugert Merizaj was sentenced to 32 years in prison in May 2022 for the shooting death of rival drug dealer Hemawand Ali Hussein and is imprisoned at HMP Manchester, where he regularly broadcasts live from his cell in breach of prison rules.
In a clip posted in August, Merizaj confirmed that he had applied to transfer to Albania as part of a deal reached in 2023.
Under the agreement, Britain is expected to pay Albania £4 million a year to repatriate 200 of its most dangerous criminals, who have been imprisoned for crimes including murder, rape, theft and drug trafficking.
However, the scheme has been hampered by delays and a source in the Albanian Prison Service told the Mail that only 11 Albanian prisoners have been transferred so far.
On November 11, a judge in the city of Fier accepted Merizaj's request and recognized the prison sentence imposed by the English court.
While he may now return, 15 other Albanian killers who were eligible for the scheme are still in British prisons, including Koci Selamaj, the sexual predator who murdered teacher Sabina Nessa.
It costs Britain more than £53,000 a year to keep a prisoner. Violent prisoners also pose a security risk, with Selamaj sentenced to an additional four and a half years in 2024 for stabbing a prison guard.
Despite his imminent transfer, Eugert Merizaj still remains at HMP Manchester, also known as Strangeways.
Although using a cell phone behind bars is illegal, the bandit has been live-streaming on TikTok since 2023 and guards seem unable to stop him.
In his latest video, shot on Thursday evening, Merizaj was seen complaining that he spent 'four days locked up without opening the doors'.
In a previous TikTok conversation discussing the possibility of returning to Albania, Merizaj listed his grievances with the British prison system.
"I may not have a phone in the Albanian prison, but I know I can get one. I haven't seen my family in seven years. I talk to them every day, but I haven't met them physically," he said.
"The food in this prison is terrible. You can't even speak Albanian here, only English. I think... I never know, maybe it will be worse in Albania. But the main reason why I want to go back is to see my family. That's what matters most," Merizaj added.
Merizaj initially filmed himself making money by winning online games and soliciting donations from viewers.
In another video, he was seen challenging another Albanian in a game, making him shoot himself in the face, smear himself with Nutella and shave his head.
Merizaj's social media content suggests that he is enjoying a comfortable lifestyle, as his previous videos reveal a television, speakers and a gaming device, as well as a number of Albanian-language books.
He also posed on Instagram wearing £555 Dolce & Gabbana sneakers outside his cell smoking an e-cigarette with the caption 'stronger than ever' written in Albanian.
Merizaj was part of a gang that lured cannabis dealer Hemawand Ali Hussein to a house in Hartlepool, County Durham, in 2019 before shooting him with a shotgun.
Sentencing him to life imprisonment in 2022, Judge Lavender accepted that Merizaj did not pull the trigger and was not at home when the murder occurred, but said he had been heavily involved in planning it and had purchased weapons, including an axe.
The killer will now be transferred to Peqin prison, a high-security facility in western Albania.
The 15 Albanian murderers remaining in British prisons include Koci Selamaj, 37, who was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum sentence of 36 years for the murder of primary school teacher Sabina Nessa on September 26, 2021.
Another, 49-year-old Ali Qazimaj, killed retired couple Peter Stuart, 75, and his wife Sylvia, 69, near their home in Weybread, Suffolk, in June 2016. The court was told he had worked as a carer for a relative of the couple's son-in-law.
