Bank of England Governor warns: AI could hit global economy and markets

The Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, has warned of the risks that the rapid development of artificial intelligence could pose to the global economy and financial system.

In a letter to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey, who heads the Financial Stability Board, said new artificial intelligence models are becoming increasingly capable and autonomous.

According to him, one of the biggest risks is related to cyberattacks. Artificial intelligence can significantly increase the speed and scale of attacks, causing problems that can spread from one country to another and affect the international financial system.

Bailey also warned that many countries are not yet prepared to control the development and use of advanced AI models.

He noted that investors' high optimism about the economic potential of artificial intelligence has contributed to rising valuations in financial markets. Combined with the high use of debt in stock and bond markets, this could increase the risk of a sharp market correction.

The British governor called for international cooperation and for measures that guarantee the safe development and use of artificial intelligence.
