Bird flu, experts: Even Albania is at risk, the first measures are taken

Bird flu has turned into an alarm for more than 20 countries in the world where many of them have already started vaccination, a step they did not even imagine before. Roland Meçaj, director of the National Veterinary and Plant Protection Authority, tells Gazetasi.al that bird flu is an infection that brings great damage to the poultry breeding economy, "this is proven by the great damage it caused in the year passed in poultry breeding establishments in our country".

Although many countries have the presence of flu in domestic or migratory birds, Meçaj says that in Albania, since the last case last year, "we have not had any cases of this disease".

This refers to the laboratory analyzes carried out by AKVMB in the ISUV reference laboratory.

Meçaj tells Gazetasi.al that the risk of the disease occurring at any moment exists and to minimize this, the National Veterinary Authority, together with veterinarians, have conducted an active surveillance in 135 farms with over 750 analysis samples.

"In all cases we have negative responses for bird flu."

Since bird flu can also arrive in Albania, AKVMB is continuously monitoring establishments, domestic farms and lagoons where there are migratory birds.

"We have done an awareness and communication campaign to increase biosecurity conditions, as one of the basic points for the prophylaxis of this disease."

Meçaj says that from the checks carried out and the communications they have had, they have not encountered problems related to Avian Influenza (Bird Flu). He adds that farmers have also been put in motion to prevent a possible infection.

"They have significantly improved the quarantine and movement of animals."

Meçaj says that the continuous monitoring of migratory birds is very important in order not to risk the infection of birds in Albania.

If H5N1 develops mutations that make it easier to transmit to humans, experts fear the emergence of a pandemic that carries more risks to global health than the Covid-19 outbreak. Although bird flu has infected relatively few people, its mortality rate is around 50 percent, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control./GazetaSi
