Prime Minister Edi Rama stated that the judges secretly requested an increase in their salaries, which would cost the state budget 37 million euros, money from Albanian taxes.
Through a video message on social media, Rama expressed that the confrontation of the judges in the session at the Constitutional Court left much to be desired, given the arguments they had used.
Rama added that with current salaries, judges in Albania are paid the same as in Greece, an EU country, and receive twice as much as judges in North Macedonia and Montenegro.
"The Constitutional Court published a few days ago the recording of the session where judges, two associations of judges, and those with unregistered legal problems, in any case, requested the Constitutional Court to increase their salaries. Now, if you listen to that recording published by the Constitutional Court, you really feel in great difficulty, thinking that these are the people who judge and give justice, the logic of those who faced the Constitutional Court leaves much to be desired. It is not a question of individuals, but this is how one speaks, I am a career judge, I understand politics, social life, everything. On the part of the Prime Minister, the idea that these people can use their power to trample on the other two branches of government was anathema, anathema. I thought this, because we are also smart. I made the request personally. He tells the judge, I said let's do this secretly, the government had its mind on the elections, not on us, to take Albanians from taxes, another 37 million euros. The court is the court in the end, he says, that if others are and are not, the rest of us who are in many other jobs, the judges are our own god and our own stick. We are aware, he says, of the level of executive power, of democracy. But what level of democracy does the judge ask with irony. I want everyone to know that the truth is that in Albania, the salaries of judges today are the same as the salaries of judges in Greece, an EU country, twice the salaries of judges in Macedonia and Montenegro," the head of government emphasized.
