Genta Tafa Bungo elected Commissioner for Protection from Discrimination

The Assembly elected on Thursday, with only the votes of the socialist majority, the former chairwoman of the Independent Qualification Commission, Genta Tafa, as Commissioner for Protection from Discrimination.

Her candidacy, previously selected by the Human Rights and Media Commission in a procedure contested by the opposition, received 83 votes in favor and 25 votes against.

The term of office as a commissioner is 5 years with the right to re-election only once.

The mandate of the previous commissioner, Robert Gajda, had already ended in 2023, while the Assembly reopened the competition for this position several times.

In the last procedure opened in March, 7 candidacies were submitted, where in addition to Tafa, Alfred Balla, Brikena Luto, Brunilda Menalla, Ermonela Xhafa, Rozeta Ivanova and Sonila Hysi were also in the running.

After hearings before the committees, the candidates needed support with at least 25 MP signatures to continue the parliamentary procedure. The Socialist Parliamentary Group chose to support its candidacy with MP signatures to pass it to the plenary session for a vote, assessing the professional side and "outstanding skills in the exercise of the profession."

The committee meeting that decided to put her name to the vote in the plenary session was called by 1/4 of the socialist members, while the committee chairwoman from the opposition, Jorida Tabaku, contested the procedure as an "imposition" by force of numbers.

"Independent institutions are not extensions of other institutions nor transit stations for political appointments. This is the third time that representatives of the so-called "new justice" have been transferred to independent institutions, raising serious questions about both their previous decisions and the independence of the institutions to which they are appointed today," Tabaku declared in a public statement last week.

Financial law professor Genta Tafa has previously served in the new justice institutions created after the Justice Reform.

She was elected to head the Independent Qualification Commission in 2017 for a 3-year term, an institution that served as the first vetting link faced by judges and prosecutors.
