Parliament of Albania

The Albanian Parliament approved this Monday morning, with 75 votes in favor, the passage through an accelerated procedure of the loan agreement between Albania and the United States of America, within the framework of the Foreign Military Financing (FMF).

The agreement, brought by the government on Friday, provides for a loan of 302 million US dollars, which will be used for the needs of the Armed Forces and strengthening the country's defense capacities.

At the start of the plenary session, the Speaker of the Assembly, Niko Peleshi, announced the inclusion of the agreement on the agenda for approval through an accelerated procedure.

"On the agenda is the approval, in principle, of the direct loan agreement between the Republic of Albania, represented by the Ministry of Finance, and the United States of America, represented by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), within the framework of the Foreign Military Financing (FMF), with a loan in the total amount of 302,000,000 (three hundred and two million) US dollars," said Peleshi.

According to him, any MP who wishes to familiarize themselves with the agreement's confidentiality statement must first sign it and then can have access to its contents.

During the presentation of the agreement in Parliament, the head of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, Taulant Balla, said that the $302 million loan constitutes an important step in strengthening Albania's defense capacities and reinforces the strategic partnership with the US.
