The Archbishop of Albania, Anastas Janullatos, passed away this Saturday, January 25, at the age of 95, after a long period of hospitalization and a serious health condition.

He passed away in Athens, at the "Evangelization" hospital, where he was receiving treatment after serious health complications.

Despite medical efforts and the intensive care he received, his condition deteriorated, due to the insufficient functioning of several organs. His body will be brought to Tirana to be honored with homage.

Who will lead the Orthodox Church?

After the death of the Archbishop, the Holy Synod, consisting of 6 metropolitans, is expected to convene within two weeks. They will vote to elect the new Archbishop, according to the rules and traditions of the Orthodox Church.

In accordance with canon law, the new Archbishop must be one of the existing metropolitans, and usually the one considered the oldest in service has priority.

The Metropolitan of Korça, His Grace Bishop Joan Pelushi, is seen as the most potential candidate. He has been a close collaborator and friend of Archbishop Anastasios, standing by him until the last moments.

Also, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople will have an advisory role, to ensure that the process takes place in harmony with the traditions and canons of the Orthodox Church.

But who is Father Joani Pelushi?

Father Joani Pelushi (Fatmir Pelushi), Metropolitan of Korça, was born on January 1, 1956. He studied for several years at the Orthodox Theological School of the Holy Cross near Boston in the United States and is a good speaker of English.

Father Joani graduated from the Holy Cross Orthodox School of Theology in Boston, with a Master of Divinity degree. He studied in the USA thanks to a scholarship established there by Albanians in America in memory of Bishop Fan Noli.
