Martin Can's family, against Rama: He is using our son's name for
The late Martin Cani and his parents

Martin Can's family has accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of using their son's name for political purposes, while institutions, according to them, have failed to clarify responsibilities and guarantee the children's safety.

In a statement distributed to the media, the family emphasizes that the closure of TikTok did not stop the murders of minors, bringing to attention the cases of Maliq and Durrës. According to Martin Can's family, installing cameras in schools is insufficient, as security requires concrete measures, psychologists and institutional responsibility.

The Cani family also raises questions about the lack of support from the prime minister, the lack of heart-lung equipment and a cardiac surgeon at the Trauma Hospital, and criticizes the manner in which the case was investigated, demanding the urgent conclusion of the investigations into the "Fan Noli" school and the health system.

The family demands justice for Martin, safety for the children, and responsibility from the institutions, emphasizing that they will not stop demanding a full investigation into the incident.

We recall that two days ago the Court of Appeal upheld the decision to sentence Mario Përlleshaj to 16 years in prison, who stabbed his peer Martin Cani to death in 2024.

Press release from the Cani family

Tirana, 17.07.2026

The Cani family expresses its deep indignation at the way Prime Minister Rama continues to use the name of our son, Martin Cani, for political and propaganda purposes, avoiding the real responsibilities of the institutions that failed to protect him.

Even today, in his public speech, the Prime Minister declared that: “Parents should feel relieved… the government is different from how it is portrayed on social media.” But in the meantime, the reality is completely different: children continue to be killed, institutions continue to fail, and tragedies are not stopping.

1. Juvenile murders didn't stop after TikTok was shut down

Despite the shutdown of TikTok, which the government used as a political justification after Martin's murder, the reality is clear:

• A minor was killed in Maliq.

• Another minor was killed in Durrës.

These tragedies show that social media is not the cause of murders, but the failure of the education system, the lack of safety in schools, and institutional irresponsibility.

2. Installing cameras doesn't solve the problem

The Prime Minister spoke today about "smart cities in schools" and the installation of cameras, saying: "The algorithm is a body that does what it says."

But the cameras:

• do not prevent violence,

• do not replace psychologists,

• do not solve the lack of security,

• They didn't save Martin, and they won't save other children without real measures.

School safety requires action, not technological devices for propaganda.

3. The Prime Minister says he "thinks about Martin constantly," but he has done nothing for our family.

If the Prime Minister really thinks about Martin:

• Why has he never met our family?

• Why has it not offered any institutional support?

• Why hasn't he apologized for the failures of the system he runs?

Words are not enough. We have only seen silence, avoidance, and political exploitation of our tragedy.

4. Why wasn't the heart device purchased that would save Martin?

Martin died because:

• The Trauma Hospital did not have a cardiac surgeon;

• The Trauma Hospital did not have the heart-lung machine, which repairs the hearts of those injured in the heart.

This equipment costs less than a government car, but it has not yet been purchased.

How many more children have to die before the government realizes that devices save lives, not cameras?

5. Why didn't the Prime Minister criticize the ministers who laughed when Martin was mentioned in Parliament?

When Martin's name was mentioned in the Assembly:

• Minister Manastirliu laughed;

• Minister Balluku laughed.

The Prime Minister didn't say a word. No distancing. No punishment. No apology.

Is this the respect he claims to have for our son?

6. The police did not do their job – the murder weapon was found by a random passerby

If the police had acted properly:

• The murder weapon would not be found by a random citizen;

• The evidence would not be at risk of being lost;

• The investigation would not be truncated.

This is clear evidence of the failure of the structures of order.

7. The Prime Minister should demand the urgent closure of the 18-month investigation into the Fan Noli school and the healthcare system

Instead of politicizing Martin's tragedy:

• The Prime Minister should request the urgent closure of the investigation into the responsibility of the Fan Noli school, which did not notify parents about Friday's incident;

• It should demand the urgent closure of the investigation into the spectacular failure of the health system, which sent Martin to the wrong hospital and did not have the equipment to save him.

18 months of investigation without answers is an institutional shame.

We will not remain silent.

Martini was not a political slogan. Martini was not a pretext for censorship. Martini was not an excuse for cameras.

Martini was a good kid, a footballer with dreams, a boy who deserved to live.

We are looking for:

• Justice for Martin

• Safety for Albania's children

• Responsibility from institutions

• Actions, not words
