The issue of the Sea, Dendias: We will have new developments throughout this

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, spoke about the relationship with Albania in an interview for the Greek media and about the issue of the sea. Dendias said that the year 2023 will see productive developments in this negotiation process.

"Yes, there are developments. The Albanian side is preparing to sign a power of attorney document, to deliver it to the country's president, as far as we know, but this is not our issue.

After that, the negotiating team will be given the opportunity to discuss the issue with us. If I had to specify a time frame, yes, I would say that within 2023 I expect to have developments" - said Dendias.

In the Greek parliament, on January 20, 2021, the draft law was approved for the expansion of the country's territorial waters from 6 to 12 miles in the Ionian Sea. This decision was accompanied by many debates and reactions in Albania regarding the fact that Greece's decision can affect the exclusive economic zone and the effect of the Greek islands in defining the maritime zones between the two countries. So this case was decided to be divided in The Hague.

Mentioning Prime Minister Rama's visit to Athens, Dendias said that the model has changed to a large extent in relations with Albania and that he believes in Greek-Albanian friendship or even in the bridge connecting the Greek minority.

The Sea Issue:

After the collapse in 2010 of the Albania-Greece agreement on maritime zones, the issue went into "silence", but it remained an open issue without a final solution between the countries, even causing internal debates in Albania and Greece. In April 2018, the Government of Albania led by Prime Minister Rama and the Government of Greece led by Alexis Tsipras officially started official talks on the issue of delimitation of maritime zones between the two countries, while after several rounds of negotiations no final agreement was reached and negotiations broke off.

On the other hand, Greece's claims for the expansion of the waters in the Ionian Sea have caused frequent reactions even from high officials of Albania. At that time, Prime Minister Rama repeated several times his positions regarding Greece's claims for the expansion of territorial waters in the Ionian Sea, stressing that "the right of 12 miles is exercised where possible".

Whether the parties will finally close this case is expected to be seen in the coming months, after the two countries have prepared the files with their claims for handling the case at the International Court of Justice in The Hague and after this court has also given a decision.
