Albanians will truly feel the benefits of being European when consumer protection standards, the natural environment, social, economic and political.
They should be the same as those of European Union countries and implemented seriously.
Online services should be a facilitating option for citizens.
Not alone and not penalizing with disproportionate fines.
But when they are imposed as the only alternative, with no other real choice, then their (un)fair and non-transparent policies become an obstacle and harm the consumer, especially the most vulnerable groups, which according to a recent study are about 56 percent of the population.
Meanwhile, digital illiterates in our country are estimated at around 80% of the population.
Low-cost airlines like WIZZ air have brought significant benefits by reducing the cost of travel and increasing accessibility.
However, in many cases they apply abusive practices that conflict with European Union directives on consumer protection.
Severe and disproportionate penalties for: (i) failure to check-in
online, as well as fines for (ii) additional bags with minimal real value, constitute abusive practices.
It is unacceptable that a passenger, after purchasing a ticket online, is not allowed to board the plane unless they pay a high fee (e.g. 47 euros) simply because they did not check-in online.
While for a suitcase, without understanding the conditions, they must pay an abusive penalty/fine of up to 78 euros, which is about 200% of the ticket price.
These are hidden costs and penalties disproportionate to the service provided.
According to international media, some of these companies are under investigation by EU authorities for unfair trade policies and for applying hidden or abusive fees to travelers.
Our country's national consumer protection agencies must also conduct
(i) in-depth, professional, and (ii) independent investigations and (ii) non-corruptible investigations.
Consumer protection is not a formal matter.
Consumer protection is an essential part of civic dignity and of the European standards that
we aim to achieve.
Good day!
