A 1-year-old child was infected with HIV/AIDS in Tirana.
His parents have tested negative and for this reason it is suspected that the child was infected in the hospital as a result of human error while receiving medical treatment.
The case is being investigated by the institutions to find those responsible for who infected the child, as this case is an alarm bell for the lack of security in health care institutions.
After being treated in infectious pediatrics, the child was transferred to a neighboring country for more specialized treatment. The case was discovered by the Executive Director of the Association of people with HIV/AIDS, Olimbi Hoxhaj, as she also provided the statistics for the first ten months of the year.
"Among the infected, two are children. One of them got the virus from his mother, while a 1-year-old is suspected to have been infected in the health system. Doubts in the case when the parents are negative are to investigate the health care that was provided in the hospital. The child is in therapy as soon as the diagnosis is confirmed.
From January to October, we have 80 new cases, 19 women and 81 men. At the same time, we have 11 deaths, 5 of which were diagnosed this year, which shows that they were diagnosed late. We have an age group of 39.5 years for women and something less for men. This is because of homo and bisexual behaviors in relationships." she told the media.
According to the data of the Institute of Public Health in Albania, 792 people are affected by this infectious disease, of which 12 are children.
