A 51-year-old man accused of sexually abusing his 8-year-old niece has been remanded in custody in Corfu, following his testimony before investigators, where he apologized for the accusations against him.

The case has become even more serious after the testimony of the girl's 28-year-old mother, who is also the daughter of the accused. She told authorities that she herself had experienced abuse from her father during the period 2010-2015, when the family lived in Albania.

According to information published by Greek media, the 8-year-old's medical report confirms that a sexual act occurred against her recently, within a period of several weeks prior to the examination.

The incident came to light after the mother took her daughter to a gynecologist on August 25, after she had been experiencing discomfort since the spring. The doctor immediately suspected abuse and did not continue with the examination so as not to alter the evidence. She immediately notified authorities and requested that the child be examined by a medical examiner.

The case file was submitted to the First Instance Prosecutor's Office of Corfu on September 9, 2026, while the 51-year-old was arrested last Friday.

An important piece of evidence for the investigation was that of the girl's 9-year-old brother. The child testified that when his mother, grandmother, and uncle were not at home, the 51-year-old would lock the 8-year-old in his room.

According to the 9-year-old's testimony, his sister's cries could be heard from the room, while the 51-year-old was also threatening her not to tell what was happening.

The family had been living together with the 51-year-old for a long time, after the girl's mother, 28, sought to reduce living expenses.
