Today, Tirana is hosting the Foreign Secretary of Great Britain, David Cameron. The first welcome is given by the banner at the Polytechnic University which reads 'Welcome Lord Cameron'. The boulevard is also filled with the flags of the United Kingdom and Albania.
Shortly before the visit to Tirana, in a statement to the British media, Cameron says that the partnership between the two countries is yielding results, especially in the fight against illegal immigration. For the year 2023, Cameron said that the number of boats with Albanian immigrants trying to cross to Great Britain has dropped by 90%.
"Our partnership with Albania is yielding a result both for our people and for playing a key role in dealing with illegal migration. Small ship arrivals from Albania to Great Britain fell by over 90% in 2023," said Cameron.
Initially, Cameron will be received by his counterpart, the Foreign Minister, Igli Hasani. Around 12:00, a 'one-on-one' meeting with Prime Minister Edi Rama is scheduled, which will be followed by a press conference. At 14.30 the British Foreign Secretary will be received by President Bajram Begaj. Cameron will also visit a police station, while announcing the opening of a cultural center.
The British media report that the focus of the discussions will be the fight against illegal immigration, while Cameron is expected to announce a plan between the two governments to fight crime and corruption. This plan envisages a joint program to train Albanian judges to fight money laundering, corruption and organized crime.
The Foreign Secretary will highlight the "key role" of the partnership between the United Kingdom and Albania in dealing with illegal immigration. Cameron will also announce initiatives to help Albania crack down on gangs that smuggle people across the English Channel and fuel crime and drugs in the UK.
