Labour will prioritise asylum claims from "safe" countries in efforts to cope with the large number of cases, following the cancellation of the Rwanda plan.

British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is expected to announce a change in the law to allow the processing of requests from migrants who have arrived illegally over the past 18 months.

According to The Times, this would bring about the cancellation of part of the Conservatives' Illegal Migration Act, which banned anyone arriving illegally in the UK from March 2023 from being granted asylum.

These people were scheduled to leave under Rishi Sunak's deportation scheme to Rwanda.

Labour has declared the former prime minister's plans to send migrants to the African country "dead and buried" after winning power.

The paper reports that the Labour law change will affect around 101,000 migrants who have arrived in the UK in small boats or other illegal routes.

Those coming from "safe" countries such as India, Vietnam and Albania are expected to prioritize asylum claims because it will be easier for them to return home.

This is in contrast to those from countries such as Afghanistan and Syria.

Only 3 percent of asylum seekers from India have received their applications, along with 7 percent of Albanians and 46 percent of Vietnamese.

The Refugee Council, a U.K.-based charity, has estimated that 70 percent of migrants previously earmarked for deportation to Rwanda will receive asylum.
