In Iliras, one of the main villages of the Qestorat unit in Memaliaj, residents drink well water. Almost every family has made an investment in digging a well as the only option to meet daily needs.
The supply of drinking water for them has not been active for 30 years. The distribution warehouse has degraded and the pipeline system has been damaged and stolen. The area that would have to be supplied by the Bênca waterworks has the fate of many other villages in Memaliaj that lack investments in basic services, especially the water and energy distribution network.
Private investments in individual wells that have not solved the problem anyway are much higher than the costs of repairing the old supply lines. The village of Iliras with about 200 inhabitants, although it is by the national road and by the river Vjoë, has a very difficult life due to the lack of water.
There are no young people in the village as agriculture also requires investment in powerful pumps to draw water from the river. Every family has someone in emigration supporting the meager income of elderly residents.
All 53 villages of Memaliaj municipality have received minimal investments over the years. In the deeper areas, the problems with road infrastructure, lighting and water supply are even more serious, which is causing some of the villages to be finally abandoned.
