An Albanian prisoner, Fatbardh Mneraj, 34 years old, escaped last night from Dozza prison in Bologna.
According to what is known so far, the Albanian convicted of robbery was spending the day at liberty, but was notified yesterday evening that he would have to return to the inner section of the prison, losing the privilege, after another sentence.
According to Italian media , during the transfer, the Albanian escaped and disappeared without a trace.
Now the prison police, who have distributed photos and personal data to all law enforcement agencies, are searching for the Albanian.
One hypothesis is that the guards left the door open and the Albanian took advantage of the fact that a police officer was busy and escaped without a trace.
The section for "semi-free" prisoners is inside the Dozza courtyard, but is separated from the prison building by stricter security measures.
Escapes from Bologna's Dozza prison are not at all frequent, on the contrary. The last news dates back to 2011, when officers thwarted an escape attempt by 8 prisoners who were caught digging through the concrete around their cell bars.
How does the semi-freedom regime work?
It is one of the benefits provided to prisoners that is decided by the Court.
The convict is allowed to spend part or all of the day outside the prison to participate in work, educational or social reintegration activities.
But like any benefit, this one can be revoked. To receive such relief, the prisoner must have served at least half of the sentence, but the total sentence must also be longer than 6 months of imprisonment.
