The Ministry of Justice has the criminal amnesty ready, which has been sent to the government, where approval is awaited for passage in the Assembly.
Minister Besfort Lamallari, in a press conference, provided details of the criminal amnesty, saying that around 10,000 people will benefit.
338 convicts will be released while 980 others will receive reduced sentences. Lamallari said that imprisonment should be the last resort.
" The criminal amnesty has been sent to the Council of Ministers, we will have the approval of the act at the government meeting and the deposition in the parliament. It is a very large category that benefits, from the preliminary figures, including the 2024 proceedings, the number of beneficiaries is high, 10 thousand people who benefit. 338 benefit from immediate release, 980 who benefit from a reduced sentence.
We have a high category of people, vulnerable groups, including women and minors who benefit from this humane act, this shows that we are a society that must be oriented towards prevention, rehabilitation, giving a second chance and support to people who at certain moments fall prey to the repressive application of the law. This is not our goal, we must change our approach, mindset, be towards forgiveness, real opportunities. Arrest in prison should be the last word , "said the minister.
The Minister explained that persons under investigation or trial do not benefit from SPAK and GJKKO.
"It does not contain these sentences. It is important for us not to create speculation. Considering the controversy we are in and the support we have provided to the new justice bodies, SPAK and GJKKO, this does not include persons under investigation or trial by GJKKO," said Lamallari.
