ALARM/ Albania among the countries with the lowest quality of higher education

Albania ranks among the countries with the lowest quality of higher education in Europe and Central Asia .

The alarm comes from the World Bank , which emphasizes that our country, like the region it is part of, faces profound challenges in the university system.

According to the report, lack of funding, outdated curricula, and the influence of politics and private interests are among the main reasons that are affecting academic quality in Albanian universities.

Universities without modern investments and no connection to the labor market are preparing young people unprepared for economic reality. Likewise, poor infrastructure and a lack of scientific research are further deepening the gap with developed countries.

The report raises concern about the decline in intergenerational progress, noting that children today are less likely to be better educated than their parents, a clear signal of regression.

The World Bank warns that unless urgent measures are taken to improve higher education and its connection to the labor market, countries like Albania will not be able to achieve high-income country status within one or two generations.

In addition to Albania, the list of countries with poor performance in education includes  North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Armenia and Azerbaijan .

The World Bank calls for reforms in funding, curricula, infrastructure, and the depoliticization of education to turn universities into true centers of knowledge and development.
