A 19-year-old British man has been jailed for life for the "torturous" murder of a cannabis dealer for £30,000 worth of drugs in north London.
The court heard how a group of men broke into the home of Albanian national Olsi Kuka, 25, while he was asleep and ransacked his flat in Whetstone to steal a quantity of cannabis on May 11, 2022.
Kuka was shot 4 times in the head with a pistol before being stabbed to death with 2 knives during the early morning raid, the court heard. Reuben Bernard, from Northamptonshire, who was 17 at the time of the attack, was convicted of murder, wounding with intent and organizing the robbery.
Bernard, the last of the group to be convicted of what the judge described as a "concerted and deliberate attack", was sentenced on Tuesday to a minimum term of 22 years.
Judge Lynn Tayton described Kuka's parents as "deeply shocked" by the "brutality" of their son's death and said they are "emotionally and physically devastated". Kuka was found with 10 stab wounds as well as 4 metal bearings embedded in his scalp.
"The family loved him"
According to the BBC, prosecutor Philip McGhee called it a "frenzied attack", adding that "everything was done to torture Kuka to make him reveal the location of the drugs". Addressing Bernard, Judge Tayton said: "Olsi Kuka was a cannabis dealer, but he was also a person with a family who loved and missed him, and whose life will never be the same because you killed him." .
Bernard, from Wootton, admitted going into the bedroom but claimed the victim pulled out a gun and held it to another person's head. He said he punched Kuka in the face to force him to drop the firearm before someone else killed him.
Bernard, who had a previous conviction for assault with a knife, claimed he was forced to stab the victim 3 times or kill himself. Jason Pitter, defending, argued that although a robbery had been committed, it was "not a murder for profit", but the judge said this was "clear".
Pitter also said the court could not be sure there was an intent to kill, which the judge accepted. In previous hearings, 4 others involved in the attack were sentenced to between 6 and 11 years in prison.
