£1 million a week, Daily Mail: "Golden Lion" from Vlora brings

The Daily Mail exposed an Albanian gangster who openly ran smuggling in the city of Dunkirk. Dubbed the "Golden Lion", he earns around £1m a week ferrying migrants to Britain on dinghies. The media publishes his footage, during a secret recording, but the name is not yet known.

He told reporters who met him as clients that he could take them in for £4,500 each and promised that the British authorities would give them food, blankets and everything else they needed before putting them up in a hotel. "After that, you can go wherever you want," he said.

The Albanian was captured by French police a few hours after meeting with the undercover journalists - only to be released the next morning. "He is just one of a string of highly organized trafficking gangs we found in northern France - one of which has 600 people on a waiting list for places on small boats," says the Daily Mail.

More than 32,000 migrants have crossed the English Channel in small boats so far this year, more than they crossed in all of 2021. Albanians made up about 60 percent of summer arrivals.

The investigation of the British media was joint with the Albanian show "Piranja". Hotels surrounding the square in the French city of Pi are packed with migrants waiting for boats, while taxi drivers offer a special €30 to take you to an illegal camp.

The increase in Albanian immigrants has meant that some vendors and cafes in Dunkirk now open on Sundays to cater for the extra customers. The journalists got to know the "Golden Lion", originally from Vlora in the south of Albania.
