Moments of fear and horror for Roberto Baggio, the most beloved Italian footballer of all time.

The 1993 Ballon d'Or winner was watching the Spain-Italy match with his family on Thursday night when five gunmen broke into his villa in Altavilla Vicenza.

Baggio grappled with one of them in an attempt to defend himself, resistance costing him a strong blow to the head from the barrel of the gun.

He and his family were then forced by the robbers to remain locked in a room for almost an hour.

As the criminals ransacked the villa and stole watches, jewellery, money and any valuables.

The world football legend, when he realized that the thieves had left the house, broke the door and called the police.

Meanwhile, he was taken to the hospital for treatment. Baggio reacted after the shocking event.

Starting his speech with thanks to all those who have reacted by standing by his family in these difficult moments.

"First of all, my family and I would like to thank everyone for the great love we have received. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

In such circumstances anything can happen, but luckily the violence I suffered only left me with a few stitches, but also a lot of fear. Fear that we have to overcome and leave behind", said Baggio.
