Matvei Safonov's "wrong" goal kicks have gone viral. In fact, it wasn't a mistake by the Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper to put the ball back into play: that shot and trajectory were part of a carefully planned plan for the Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich.
A move that many have described as one of Luis Enrique's most ingenious and controversial tactical intuitions, to manipulate the opponent's positioning and overpopulate that area of the field where one of the Germans' most dangerous footballers played: Michael Olise, constantly trapped in a "cage" with two or three opponents (including Fabian Ruiz, who often marked him closely) and neutralized by numerical inferiority in a very narrow space.
The real aim was not to immediately retain possession of the ball, but to create favorable opportunities for aggressive recovery of the ball, as well as to neutralize one of the opponent's strong points. And it is not the first time that the Spanish coach has proposed similar ideas: in the past he has also experimented with kick-offs that seemed strange, deliberately directed towards the opponent's end line to win deep throw-ins.
PSG's plan: deliberately kick the ball out of bounds
Instead of building the action from the back (a dangerous choice against a team like Bayern, which exerts a lot of pressure) or looking for long balls towards the attackers, Safonov had received clear instructions from the Spanish coach: to send the ball directly to the wing and as far as possible to a specific area of the opponent's half of the field. It was not a question of technical errors, but of a deliberate choice to disrupt the rhythm of the Germans, to orient their movements and to draw them into a kind of tactical funnel, creating situations in favor of PSG. The target was almost always the same: the Bavarians' right wing, in the area of Michael Olise.
And not only that. The throw-in thus became a kind of standard shot useful for organizing pressure even more intelligently. Compared to a classic throw-in from the goal, this situation allowed the French to better prepare their markings, close the passing lines, immediately attack second balls and recover possession in advanced areas.
How Safonov's "trick" worked
A series of videos shared on social media have allowed us to analyze what the television broadcast failed to show and what the statistics recorded as incorrect throw-ins by the Russian goalkeeper. The strategy was built in three very precise phases.
Pse kjo strategji u konsiderua gjeniale
Me pak fjalë, francezët zgjodhën vetë se ku do të luante Bayern.
Objektivi kryesor ishte neutralizimi i Michael Olise
