Dwamena's Sad Childhood: Abandoned by parents and raised in hardship by
Raphael Dwamena

We will all remember Raphael Dwamena for the beautiful game and the spectacular goals he scored in different teams, among them recently with Egnatia in Albania, before he closed his eyes for the last time on Saturday, after suffered a heart attack during the match against Partizan and then died in the hospital.

Although he was constantly seen as positive, beyond the fact that he suffered from heart disease and had suffered two heart attacks that penalized him a lot, the life of the 28-year-old from Ghana had not been easy or in other words complete.

In an interview he gave to the Swiss media "NZZ" on October 19, 2022, about a year ago, the Ghanaian confessed his life and childhood, which inside had a lot of pain.

While recounting his childhood, Dwamena shared that it all started in Nkaukau, a small town in Ghana.

Raphael was raised amid hardships by his grandmother, as his unmarried parents abandoned him at birth.

When he grew up, although it was too late, he met his parents again, by the time he had already become a popular player in Ghana and his talent had taken off.

When he met his parents, one of the questions his mother asked him was, "How old are you?" She did not even remember that when she had given birth to her son, she had forgotten him.

Above all, at no point did Dwamena choose to ask his parents why they let him grow up with his grandmother. Reason? He didn't want to appear ungrateful to his grandmother.

She was a very strict and authoritarian woman. Devout Christian believer and school principal in the area where she lived. To supplement the family's income, the grandmother was forced to allow little Raphael to sell homemade ice cream.

If little Raphael loved football, grandma thought otherwise. According to her, football was a waste of time and that school should come first.

Every time the grandmother fell asleep, the boy would secretly, without her noticing, leave the house and go down to the neighborhood to play football with the other children.

Despite the son's great love for football, the grandmother did not change her opinion for a long time.

Right there on the street, when he was playing with the neighborhood kids, a talent scout spots him and invites him to an audition on Monday.

However, the grandmother appears again, with the argument that the boy should be at school on Monday, and according to her, he could not do any football test.

Desperate Raphael asks many relatives and family members to act as intercessors for his grandmother, including her son, Patrick.

After long negotiations, the grandmother agrees. When he was only 14 years old, his uncle gave Dwamena his first football boots, a pair of yellow Diadora.

They would be his most important treasure, and this was declared by the striker himself a year ago: "When I got them, I couldn't sleep all night. I had to make sure the shoes were still there in the morning."

Raphael is then accepted into the local Red Bull academy. His first contract was 100 euros per month.

"As a child, I didn't know what to do with so much money," he said.

After three years in the academy, Red Bull sent the talented youngster to Austria, to the Salzburg academy.

He played with the U-18 team, and then was taken by the main team, and there began his story in professional football, to end tragically on Saturday, November 11, 2023, where he closed his eyes for the last time, after suffering a heart attack during the match against Partizan and then died in the hospital.
