The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, called this afternoon Fredi Beleri, who was elected a member of the European Parliament in Greece, at a time when he is in prison in Albania for buying votes.

According to Greek media, Mitsotakis congratulated Beleri for the victory. Tomorrow Mitsotakis is expected to hold a meeting at 10:00 am with the new MEPs of New Democracy, in Megaros Maximos.

Fredi Beleri, convicted by GJKKO for buying votes in the local elections of May 14, 2023, has been elected by the Greeks as a member of the European Parliament. Beleri was ranked fourth among those voted as a candidate in the Greek elections and became one of the 21 Greek MEPs in the EP and one of the 7 elected by Mitsotakis' New Democracy party.

Beleri himself has considered it a triumph of democracy, while in Himare a party has started among his supporters.

Despite the rise of the populist right, the center-right European People's Party (EPP) group came out on top, as they have in every European parliamentary election since 1999, with 186 lawmakers for the 720-seat chamber.

Citizens of the European Union went to the polls in the 27 member states between June 6 and 9, and these elections have raised numerous debates on Europe's political future.
