Timothy Garton Ash conversation with Rama: Brexit, political defeat! Where did

The famous British historian, author and journalist, Timothy Garton Ash was today the next guest on Prime Minister Edi Rama's "Flasim" podcast.

In a conversation with Prime Minister Rama, Timothy Garton Ash described the fact of being a journalist and historian at the same time as a great advantage, since according to him, "both, in essence, are in search of the truth".

"The task of both is to tell the truth and we do it in a slightly different way. The contradiction comes when you start thinking—I call it the 'Kissinger rite'—when you think of yourself as a decision maker and you almost try to be a government and make government policy, instead of doing what our job is, trying to to seek the truth and to tell it as it is, speaking truth to power. So, this is what I thought I have always done," he said.

The British historian described Brexit as the biggest political defeat of his life.

"My whole life has revolved around Europe, I am an English European, so the separation of Britain from Europe is a tragedy for Britain, but I also think about the European Union and the future of Europe. However, I don't think Brexit has cut down that oak of Britishness you described. I think it continues to be there," he added.

According to him, the mistake that Tony Blair made was to believe that it was possible to have only opening, opening, opening.

"Opening of society, opening of finances, opening of the economy, opening of immigration without any reaction! Because there was actually a reaction. And the slogan of the Brexiteers that gave them victory was 'Take back control'. What is happening now in Germany is that German leaders are talking about "kontrolverlust" (loss of control). So I think all our societies need that sense that things are under control, that immigration is being managed. So I think this was a mistake of the Blair years, for which we paid dearly. But the fact that we are now trying to bring it under control, like all other European countries, does not mean that it is the end of our cultural diversity, it is beyond it," he said.

Speaking about the future of the EU, the British historian said: "If a new generation of Europeans were mobilized, not only to protect what we have achieved, which is the best Europe we have had, but also to expand it. and improved what is completely possible, after 10 years, we will be able to look back and have a Union of 35 states and we will have managed to protect what we have, the free way of life in Europe. It is possible, but it is in our hands."

This, according to him, "must happen without any single country as hegemonic".
