Talat Xhaferi is the first Albanian prime minister in North Macedonia, who will lead the technical government until new elections are held.
The President of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, spoke to journalist Sidorela Gjoni about his appointment to this important position.
Pendarovski stated that he has known Talat Xhaferi privately since earlier and added that he is impartial and correct in his work.
"In the past 20 years, after the Ohrid agreement was signed, Albanians are very well represented in the entire Macedonian system. There is no institution where they do not have access. We have Albanians in very high positions.
If in 2001 it was 2.4%, now it is at the level of 21%. We had an Albanian president, now we have a prime minister. I have no doubt that he will be prime minister if he has the votes of all, of the majority.
We work with Mr. Xhaferi in official ways, but we also know each other privately since the past years. Talat Xhaferi has worked in a professional, impartial manner and this was one of the reasons why SDSM gave him support to be the speaker of the Parliament in Macedonia.
I also told you in the first answer that my choice was made thanks to the choice of the majority of voters. For the past 5 years, I have been the same for everyone, regardless of their ethnicity. As for the Albanians, you put me in a not very comfortable position, but I can say that in the past 5 years, the Albanians in my activities of responsibility have reached the highest positions. We have generals, members of the Security Council, etc.
I don't know if you mean the past 5 years, but the other 20 years as I have been in other difficult positions. The most difficult moment was in 2001, but we reached a very good agreement thanks to negotiations. We spent 7 difficult months and reached the Ohrid agreement.
In my relations as president with all my colleagues, I have one principle, it is the legitimacy of the respective country that we elect. I have excellent communication with both Meta and Bega and we have cooperated very well. Thanks to these relations, the relations between the two countries are also excellent", said Pendarovski.
Asked about the decision of the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, to participate with Vetevendosje in the elections of North Macedonia, Pendarovski said that he does not see any objection, as long as all the people who will engage with this party will be citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia.
"There is no problem since the people who will be part of the process, who will be engaged, are Macedonian people, and Mr. Kurti will provide support. We have different parties that receive support from different groups or parties. They have their preferences for a party or individual to win. But the support given by Kurti is not objectionable, contestable, since citizens of the Republic of Macedonia will not participate, but citizens of the Republic of Macedonia", he said.
Pendarovski said at the end of his conversation that he hopes to visit the Albanian coast for the first time to spend the summer holidays. He said that for this he received an invitation from his counterpart Bajram Begaj.
"You are right, I participated in the Adriatic for conferences, but unfortunately I did not go on vacation, but my colleague Begaj invited me, so I hope to take a vacation on the Albanian coast that so many colleagues are talking about", he concluded Pendarovsky.
