Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has reacted after the controversy created over statements about the future of the Albania-Italy agreement for the migrant centers in Gjadra and Shëngjin.

In a reaction to Italian and international media, Rama stressed that the protocol between the two countries remains in force and there is no political uncertainty about its continuation.

"To all journalists from Italy and beyond, who are contacting me about a misinterpreted quote from a media outlet after the interview of the Albanian Foreign Minister: I want to reiterate clearly and once and for all that our protocol with Italy will remain in force for as long as Italy wishes," Rama said.

The Prime Minister's reaction comes after the public clarification of Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Ferit Hoxha, who denied that Albania has made a decision not to extend the agreement after the end of the five-year term.

Hoxha emphasized that his statement in Brussels was interpreted out of context and was simply a hypothetical response regarding Albania's future in the European Union, underlining that it is not about a change in political stance.

The debate was sparked after media reports from Euractiv, which interpreted that Tirana would not extend the protocol beyond the initial deadline.

The Albania-Italy agreement for the establishment of migrant centers in Gjadra and Shëngjin, signed in 2024, remains part of bilateral cooperation in the field of migration management, within the framework of the policies of the Italian government led by Giorgia Meloni.
