Rama talks about the meeting with McGonigal: What was discussed and who was
Edi Rama and Grida Duma

Prime Minister Edi Rama has broken the silence regarding the former FBI official, Charles McGonigal. In an interview for Top Story, he told the meetings with the former FBI official, what he talked about, while he emphasized that he and his friends did not benefit from the Albanian government.

Why have you been silent? You did not appear in the interpellation, are you silent as a strategy?

Rama: In fact, I have not remained silent, I have said what I can say in the conditions when there is nothing directly related to me, the government or any Albanian officials. The case has received a stir, but not because of the aspect of the investigation related to Albania, but because of the accusation that he related to a well-known Russian oligarch.

First, I want to repeat that I don't have much to say in this conversation, but since today I refused and will continue to refuse, not for specific issues but as a whole, to be in the assembly hall or to be involved with an opposition which is on a scary ethical level and which has attracted me to that level as well but it is worth it calmly and thank you for the opportunity to explain things that I can explain to you.

I met him at his request, I waited for him in the office, we had a friendly conversation in general terms, he told me that his work focuses on the Russian influence, we talked about the region and the Russian influence, and then the other meetings were meetings that have come as a result of his presence here or my presence in the US and invited me to the FBI offices in New York. I don't see anything extraordinary other than a normal relationship, I had no obligation to notify the American embassy as part of my duty.

You say that the opposition has drawn you into an unpopular ethic, and that opposition says that you are associated with a lobbying of this official. Is it within state protocol for two individuals with business interests to meet with an FBI official and the president of a country?

First, to return to the purpose of your elaboration, the opposition says these and other things, but the problem is that it is the opposition and not American justice.

If only the opposition told him, I wouldn't tell you.

The international media do not say anything like that, they do not implicate the government or me, and they have no reason to do so when the indictment has no such thing. I assure you that there is no line about this and we have not been asked nor asked to give an explanation. The former FBI official's case is specifically about how he applied the FBI's rules and codes of ethics to the laws of his own country. You said that it is ethical to meet with two businessmen? This did not happen, I did not meet any kind of businessman, he came together with an Albanian-American citizen who introduced himself to me as his friend and I said hi.

Has this citizen benefited from a tender from the government?

I don't talk about the relationship I had with the senior FBI official and I'm not the person who should be asked if he benefited from anything, nothing benefited from me.
