Rama: Within this decade, Albania will be independent in terms of energy supply,
Prime Minister Edi Rama

Prime Minister Edi Rama held meetings in Fier on Tuesday where he discussed achievements and plans for electricity. He said that domestic energy production in Albania has doubled.

Rama added that with the launch of several projects and the development of innovation, Albania will not only have sufficient energy but will also become an energy exporting country.

According to him, within this decade Albania will be energetically and totally independent from any external development.

"Even if we had the situation of the energy sector as it was before this transformation, there are meaningful facts and facts that make us quite optimistic about the future of the sector and if the future of this sector is optimistic, then the entire development and the future of the country is optimistic. The fact that today we are talking about an almost doubled domestic production is significant.

When you consider that we started this effort with the production base of the communist era minus the hydroelectric power plants that were strangely removed from the state's asset stock and given to the private sector with an argument that in itself is a pure criminal offense.

Today we have almost doubled the production compared to where we started. This is not only an increase in production, it is also a diversification of the base that was only hydro, which has understandable vulnerability even without introducing climate change, while it is becoming increasingly unpredictable what the future of hydro will be like.

So, with the diversification with 10% of production that today comes from the sun, with the start of several wind projects, with the extraordinary innovation that we will be lucky enough to have in Albania for the water pumping system, we have reason to think that Albania's complete energy independence is close and the transformation from a country with a major energy problem to a net exporter of electricity is close.

Two historic developments that, if things go according to our plans, based on the requests we currently have under administration from investors, and based on what we have planned, within this decade Albania will be energetically and totally independent from any external development.

So it will decide its own fate in relation to energy and will switch to net exports, which means that it is not only production but also transmission that has seen significant progress, as well as the extension of Albania's entire transmission network in all directions, where the icing on the cake is the agreement with Italy.

"From the point of view of losses, we are in the normal parameters of a European country, while we were an extra-European phenomenon. To find our peers, we had to go to countries far away from Europe where energy was divided according to individual capacity to steal it or take it illegally. Or to take it legally and not pay for it at all," said Rama.
