The British media  published an article on Monday according to which a secret operation to stop Albanian crime bosses operating in Britain, codenamed "Crime State Nexus", has been launched by the United Kingdom government for some time.

The project launched by officials in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Interior aims to expose and target corrupt politicians in the Balkans linked to organized crime.

Details of the operation were revealed in government court documents related to a legal battle over a decision to ban former prime minister Sali Berisha from entering Britain.

Albanian gangs were described in legal documents as an 'acute threat' to Britain as they are 'widespread in organized crime through their involvement in the cocaine trade, people smuggling and prostitution'.

The papers also cite that the data shows that Albanians are the largest foreign nationality in UK prisons.

Great Britain banned former Albanian president Sali Berisha from entering the country in July 2022, a decision he appealed to the Special Immigration Appeals Commission in London. The commission will express itself on this issue next month.

Documents related to the complaint allege that the links between politics and crime in Albania create a permissive environment in which criminals and organized crime gangs can operate and benefit from the political protection of corrupt politicians.

British papers also say political protection gives gangs more opportunities to launder money and means Albania can be used as a safe haven from which to operate.

The Crime State Nexus project seeks to take action against politically exposed persons in Albania, which may include detaining them from Britain. Therefore, the main goal is to break the ties between politics, business and illegal activity.
