The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Beirsha, called Ogerta Manastirliu, the candidate proposed by Edi Rama for the Municipality of Tirana, a "raven of corruption."
"And who did he bring to Tirana? He brought the raven of corruption. He brought the man who, with the stance he took on Covid, absolutely deserves, at the very least, a life sentence. There are 22 thousand deaths that she hid. Plus the other things. There are 500 million euros, evaporated, given for Covid. And he brings it to the citizens of Tirana as if Tirana were the SP's garden ," Berisha said in a press conference.
Berisha thanked the DP candidate for the Municipality of Tirana in the last elections, Belind Këlliçi, for the work he did in denouncing the mayor Erion Veliaj, who is currently in detention. " I must congratulate the Tirana branch and Belind Këlliçi for not giving in to that thief, one of the most vile in Albania, whose name is Erion Veliaj, for 46 weeks."
During his speech at the Socialist Party Assembly, Rama asked the members of the Tirana Municipal Council to initiate procedures for the dismissal of Mayor Veliaj, to pave the way for elections.
A day earlier, the Special Prosecution Office sent Veliaj's file to court, after closing the investigation against him. Veliaj is accused of corruption and other criminal offenses.
