Kurti: The West is pampering Serbia, Kosovo is paying the price and this is not

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, on Friday accused Western officials of "coddling" Serbia, driven by, as he said, excessive fear that Belgrade will get closer to Moscow.

In an interview in Brussels for the Reuters news agency, Prime Minister Kurti said that the European Union is failing to play the role of arbitrator in the implementation of an agreement mediated by the bloc for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia.

"I think that the (Western) pampering of Serbia for two and a half years since the beginning of the Russian aggression in Ukraine is not paying off. And someone has to say: 'enough'," he said, underlining that ties between Belgrade and Moscow are make the West very wary of Serbia.

"And the consequence is that Kosovo is also paying the price and this is not fair", he said.

Serbia has refused to join Western sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine even as it has condemned Moscow's aggression. President Aleksandar Vucic has said that imposing sanctions is not in the national interest of Serbia.

However, Serbian weaponry has found its way to Ukrainian forces, although the Serbian government says it is not supplying them.

The officials of the European Union and the United States have blamed the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, for the failure to move forward with the agreement between Serbia and Kosovo, reached in March last year in Ohrid.

But Mr. Kurti rejected these assertions and said that the West is failing to react to the violation of the agreement by the Serbian side.

"I want Brussels to play the role of an arbitrator who will blow the whistle whenever there is a violation of the agreement. So what we have seen in these two years is that every time Belgrade has violated the agreement, Brussels has not acted, it has not We must have Brussels, which puts pressure on Serbia to respect the agreement and engage constructively, in good faith and with good will in its full implementation", said Prime Minister Kurti.

Kosovo has come under criticism from Western diplomacy for what have been described as unilateral and uncoordinated actions in the north, where the authorities closed Serbian parallel municipalities appointed by Belgrade, which Pristina considers illegal.

In early August, authorities closed the Serbian Post Office in the north and unveiled plans to open the main bridge over the Iber River in Mitrovica to car traffic, amid criticism from the West.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that Serbia wants to keep the bridge in Mitrovica closed, because according to him, it intends to keep alive the dream of the division of Kosovo.

"They want to turn (the river) Ibar into a new border. This will not happen. However, they have found some partners in their goal also in the West, due to the excessive concern and fear of some of the Western diplomats that the destabilization could be repeated", he said, underlining that Serbia is doing everything to prevent the integration of Serbs in the institutions of Kosovo.

Kosovo considers the municipal institutions appointed by Belgrade illegal.

The abolition of Serbian parallel institutions was foreseen in the 2013 agreement for the normalization of Kosovo-Serbia relations, but its implementation has stalled.

The West demands from Kosovo that the issues related to the situation in the north of Kosovo be addressed within the dialogue in Brussels

But the 13-year talks on the normalization of Kosovo-Serbia relations have marked little progress.
