'Kathimerini' reveals the behind-the-scenes: Rama asks Vangjel Tavos
Edi Rama and Vangjel Tavo

The Greek newspaper "Kathimerini" writes that Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has started talks to find a provisional mayor of Himara Municipality.

According to this newspaper, the former MP Vangjel Tavo was selected. "Kathimerini" even provides details from a meeting between Rama and Tavo.

According to "Kathimerini", on the eve of Christmas, the former minister and former deputy of Dropulli for many years, Vangjl Tavo, a prominent member of the Greek minority and a private doctor today, received a phone call from Edi Rama, who asked to meet for "a coffee" in Tirana. Tavo accepted the invitation, although the relationship between the two men had soured since Tavo had left the Socialist Party to join forces with Ilir Meta in founding the LSI. Rama had preceded this phone call in mid-December with another phone call with Tavo, this time on a human level, about an unpleasant event, namely the death of his daughter in a car accident.

According to "Kathimerini", Rama and Tavo met in a well-known cafe in Tirana and there the Albanian Prime Minister, after expressing his desire to end the stalemate with Athens, asked him for help in this direction so that Tavo assume the role of temporary six-month mayor of Himara. As Tavo's colleagues report, Rama explained to him that during his term as mayor, the trial will end and if Beler is declared innocent, he will take the post of mayor, otherwise, new elections will be announced in the Municipality of Himara.

According to the same sources, writes "Kathimerini", Tavo explained to Rama that he should not forget that he comes from Dropulli and not from Himara, to get Rama's answer that this is not an obstacle. Rama told him that "the other members of the Greek minority are not from Himara, but govern there".

Tavo did not reject the proposal and is said to have stated that he would be willing to help alleviate the situation. However, he made it clear to Rama that he would only accept it if it was accepted by the Greek side, while emphasizing that he will not sign any decision or document that may be related to the Greek properties of Himara.

"Kathimerini" further emphasizes that according to what Tavo has told his close associates, Rama did not reject his reasoning and then Tavo notified the Greek government, while the case remains open, since in Athens it is said that this request it has not been officially announced by the Albanian side.

Government sources in Athens affirmed at the same time that "the person who will be elected cannot be from the Rama environment, but must be as close as possible to the positions of the minority", while they did not rule out that this person is Tavo, stressing that they have not received relevant information from Tirana, writes Kathimerini. Apparently, the Albanian side is trying to find a solution to the Beleri issue without Beleri, targeting other minority personalities beyond Tavo, while the detained mayor's side tries to burn every scenario in this direction, writes Kathimerini.
