It is the first time in 32 years that the port of the fortified tunnel of Porto Palermo has been opened.
This is the first step of a ministry of defence project for the rehabilitation and rehabilitation of the entire infrastructural complex in the Gulf of Panorma for military and civilian functions.
"The project aims to manage the area, which has started to be a privileged tourist destination, respecting environmental norms and providing the highest conditions of navigational safety. The next step will be to adapt the complex objects that no longer enjoy military functions, with the aim of creating a sustainable tourist attraction.
The project also aims to restore to technical readiness these precious assets of our Naval Force, which can serve the purposes of national and international exercises" the Ministry of Defence said.
The opening of the tunnel was carried out under the direction of engineering staff of the Genion Battalion and passed without any problems despite over 3 decades of non-activation.
The tunnel served as an autonomous base for safe housing and passage of naval vehicles of the military navy of the time, within the Porto Palermo peninsula.
The steel gate opening of this concrete-clad water tunnel has set its mechanism in motion for the first time in a long time.
Construction of this tunnel began in 1969 and lasted until 1988. It served for the safe housing and passage of naval vehicles of the military navy of the time, while serving simultaneously as a powerful and protected base.
